Helping Terminally ill Children and their families
The My Wish Foundation works in the areas of health, education, the alleviation of poverty and community development.
My Wish was setup in August 2009 as a charity whose primary aim is to help terminally ill children and their families.
We intend to give the children
positive life experiences by granting a wish and enabling them to do something they have only dreamt of before. Our other main aim is to provide practical and emotional support to both the children and their families.
We started our work in Sri Lanka because there is currently no other charity providing long term support to terminally ill children and their families.
The healthcare system in Sri Lanka struggles to meet the needs of
critically and terminally ill children. From medicines to provision of adequate healthy food, parents of sick children must pick up essential costs and often simply cannot afford to do so.
When their children are in hospital, mothers are essentailly long-term carers, and will often stay with the child in hospital for long periods of time.
When parents become full-time carers, they often lose their jobs and their income. As there is no benefit system in Sri Lanka, the result for parents and all the family's children is severe financial hardship.
